I was reading my journal this morning and had to chuckle at how God answered a prayer. As I had written last week, Gabe and I went away for the weekend, without the girls and we were really excited to have this time together… just us. I asked Him to refresh us, renew us and unify us more as one.
Well, He did. And He used a very scary experience to answer this request.
Friday afternoon we left our house around 4pm and got to Albuquerque at 7. We went straight to a sushi restaurant that was recommended by some friends. We had such a fun time! At 8:30 we left to go check into our hotel. It was so nice out, so we went for a walk and enjoyed the carefree evening. About 9:00 Gabe said that his head hurt and we should just go back to the room. At 10:30 he was in writhing pain in his head and began to lose vision in his eye and his face started to turn numb as well as his arms and feet. I got him in the car as fast as we could and headed to the ER. We had to wait for an hour and he continued to get worse. He thought it was possibly decompression sickness ( since he is a physiologist and works in altitude chambers and had just been in one 30 hours prior.)
I waited while they ran tests. He could barely talk so I just sat and prayed for him. They wheeled him out for an MRI. Those 20 minutes lasted forever.
I asked the Lord to help me trust Him more.
It’s unexplained at this point but, it appears to be an allergic reaction to something in the sushi and possibly triggered a migraine.
The 5 hours in the ER humbled us. In the morning, after he was feeling better, we re-evaluated our lives. We made personal goals and goals for our family and marriage. We prayed and read the Word together. We shared concerns and dreams. We talked the nitty gritty of child rearing and how we can make improvements… It was like time stood still.
Refreshed. Renewed. More unified. Closer to the tender heart of the Lord.
I’m thankful.
Isaiah 43:1-3
1 But now, this is what the LORD says—
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
3 For I am the LORD, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
Isaiah 43:18-19
18 "Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert
and streams in the wasteland
