We are at the beach in Michigan. I had one of those moments I wish could last forever. Miriam and I were strolling down the beach as she is dragging a stick in the sand. She stops to draw.
"I'm going to be an artist when I get big. I will draw whatever I see. Like this."
Looking to the left, then the right.
"See, a flower. Now, a rainbow. oh, yes. a pig. Oh, yea. He needs a tail."
We walk some more. She looks out over the water.
"Now, the waves, and the sun."
The waves come and wash it all away. I inwardly sigh. All that work gone.
"Oh, it's fine. I will just start over. Let's see.... a bug... and a balloon...."
Then she says matter- of- factly, " Ok, let's pretend to be animals. So off we go, stomping down the beach like T- Rexs, kangaroos, slithering like snakes, and Sea Rays, then flying like birds.
Freedom. Joy. Smiles all over.
