Ella Grace is fearful of the dark. She has a hard time going to sleep and wakes up scared. It’s been a good opportunity to remind her to put her trust in God when she is fearful. A few weeks ago, I was watering one of my plants (given to us by some neighbors when they moved) that has several pretty stones on the top. They are all smooth and mostly for decoration. I noticed a rather big one that said TRUST on it. When I was putting her to sleep, I showed her the rock and told her what it said. She wanted to sleep with it under her pillow. We’ve made a little song about Our Rock, from Psalm 62:2. The Lord is my Rock and my salvation; He is my fortress; I will never be shaken. I reminded her that God is always taking care of her. So, we sang the song and prayed that she would sleep well. She came out the next morning holding her rock and said, “Mom! God helped me sleep!” Her sleeping has been much better and she hasn’t been waking up nearly as often… until the past three nights.
I’ve been praying for wisdom, again, for how to handle these interruptions in the middle of the night. Last night she appeared in our room twice. I was so tired I could not think of anything to say. So I asked God for wisdom. What came out of my mouth surprised me! Here is what happened at 2:00 am.
God reminded me of a song we’ve made up to Philippians 4:8.“Whatever things are true and honorable and right and pure and lovely.. Admirable and excellent, worthy of praise.. Think on these things!” I was able to patiently tell her that when she thinks about things that are making her scared to FIRST PRAY and ask God to help her stop the bad ones. SECOND, for her to replace (“put off”) the bad ones and THIRD think about happy ones. (“Put on”) I went back to my room hoping that was the end for the night! But as I headed back, the Lord reminded me that it was just the beginning of opportunities for her to hear the Word and for Him to change her.
This morning we talked about what things she thought about to help her go to sleep. “Books, Mommy, Birthdays, Daddy, Susie ( her doll).”
“Do you remember our Bible verse Mommy sang to you last night?”
“Yes.”
“Let’s say Philippians 3:8 again. Want to with me?”
“Mom, It’s not Philippians 3:8! It’s Philippians 4”8!”
“Oh, yes. I am glad you remembered.”

Hi Kelly-
I found your blog through Hannah's-I went to school with her and Gabe. You guys have a sweet family and I've enjoyed reading about how you are sharing God's Word with your girls. Do you have Steve Green's "Hide Them In Your Heart" cd's and/or dvd's? If you don't, you would probably love them because the songs are straight from scripture. There's one called "When I am afraid I will trust in you" (I think from Ps 56:3?) that my kids like to sing when they're scared.
The Hide them in your heart cd's are really good. My kids love them too. There are also other ones called "Seeds Family Worship" They are all songs written with scripture too. There is one called "Seeds of Courage" Some of the songs: Call Me ( Jeremiah 33:3 ) Do not Be Anxious ( Pillippians 4:6-7 ) Never Be Shaken ( Psalm 62:1-2 )Do Not Fear ( Isaiah 41:10 )
I really like this post. I'm excited about the time when I will get to counsel my little one about trusting in Jesus. This really encourages me. :o)
